大地主の秩父番助宅に、隣人の岩根鳶吉がやってきて、ひとり娘のとみえを嫁にほしいと申し出る。求婚されたことを聞かされていないとみえは、鳶吉と話しているうちに、山の所有権をめぐって意見が対立し、番助も加わってお互いの家族の悪口にまでエスカレートする。

Tobikichi Iwane visits the landowner, Vansuke Chichibu who lives next door to ask him permission to marry his only daughter, Tomie. Tomie appears but doesn't know the reason for Tobikichi's visit. They begin to talk & an argument over the ownership of a mountain, quickly ensues. Vansuke returns & the argument escalates to both sides slandering each other's families.
